Materially, Wilbert is comfortable. Not rich, not wealthy, not set for life, just comfortable. He’s still a working stiff, devoted to faith-based community service. But spiritually, he is a rich man.

Some of his old college pals have forged highly successful careers. They are doctors and lawyers and engineers and professors. Many of them are also involved in community service and church work. But Wilbert wonders what became of one particular old friend.

Says Wilbert:

There was this one really brilliant cat, this really intellectual guy I used to hang around in college. He was deep into the existentialists—Nietzsche, Sartre—and he could just whip you down in intellectual discourse with these highbrow concepts. Come to think of it, this was when everyone was talking about “finding yourself.” Come to think of it, this was the same time they were saying, “God is dead.” Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Anyway, I would get into these discussions sometimes with this existentialist brother and he would not want to hear this talk about God. I was not really on the right course yet, but I did have some grasp of God and religious faith. After all, I was raised by Addie Burgess and she was a God-fearing woman, no doubt. And she made sure we knew about Him, too.

But this brother would just come apart in these discussions. This brilliant, accomplished, deep-thinking guy couldn’t deal with that old, second-grade-education Addie Burgess Jesus. He would just come apart. With all his education and existentialism, he couldn’t handle her Jesus.
